No, I'm not English or Mexican or for that matter Irish (hand goal). I'm Canadian, born in Toronto. Yes I support all our losing teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Blue Jays, Raptors, and TFC. Don't hold that against me. And yes, I support Canadian soccer and long for the day when we are close enough to a World Cup berth that can be decided by a referee's decision.

Keep Your Kids Off the Streets and on the Fields
Your kids are registered to play soccer for the upcoming season and lets hope they are looking forward to the experience. I say that, because if you're looking forward to your son or daughter playing soccer more than they are, then there is something wrong that picture. Did your children agree to play because they were too afraid to disappoint you by saying they didn't want to play? I

New Year's Wish
From all volunteer coaches and administrators across Canada
Everywhere I go and whenever I talk to coaches and administrators across the country, I always seem to hear the same complaints about the state of soccer in this country and for some strange reason, the brunt of the complaints are directed at both the National and Provincial Associations. The complaints vary based on where the individual I talk to fits into the picture. Not being totally involved in the administration of the game it's not always fair to make comments when you really do not know the inside and out of an issue.

Time to Debunk Some Myths About Soccer
Turn on sports talk radio. Read the newspaper. Watch Sports Center. Sooner or later, you'll hear one - a potshot at soccer.
The mainstream American media has been spreading myths about soccer for so long that many sports fan accept them as fact. It's time to debunk some of those myths. A little true or false (with some equivocation):
Soccer is boring. FALSE. Any sport where the ball is actually in play more than 70 percent of the time isn't boring. You can make multiple trips to the bathroom or fridge during any baseball, football or basketball game and not miss a thing. Why? Constant timeouts, continual substitutions and the indisputable fact that the ball is not in play for the majority of time. Is the ball actually in play during a baseball game even five percent of the time? You can argue that Americans have short attention spans, but don't tell me that soccer is boring. There is something happening virtually every minute of the game because of the simple fact the ball is play.

Sport's Role in Society
Let's Not Forget
Last month, students took over council at City Hall in Toronto to evaluate and critique the budget and social issues that affect the city. Their results made front-page news in the local section of The Toronto Star. The main issue that grabbed the headlines was regarding the cost of the new 48 million-dollar police target-shooting centre currently being built. Students cited that vandalism and violence often stems from youth's not having other things to do to occupy their time and is the root of the problem. They state that the city is in dire needs of community centres and with 48 million dollars, the students felt that the money should have been used to build 4 new community centres.

Player Development
Starts at the Socks
Have you ever watched the best players in the world and wondered: how did they do that? They perform a brilliant pass, finding a player in the open while being under extreme pressure. Or they score a brilliant goal and it seemed as if the player knew where everything and everyone was and then made the right decision under pressure. It may be a quick dribble into a space that didn't even seem to be there but suddenly appeared.

How To Guarantee Success
Coach Passion
When I look at all the kids who play soccer today compared to the relative few that played 20-30 years ago, I often ask: do they have the same passion for the game that existed years ago?
We see success at the Women's game and not quite as much in our men's game. Why?
In the seventies and eighties, there were very few qualified coaches in comparison to today. In fact, I would estimate that we have more coaches with licenses, levels and extra courses today in one district than we had thirty years ago in the whole country. So then, why have our Men's National Team not made it into the World Cup since 1986? Is there something wrong with our coaching development program? One might assume that there must be given the statistics.

Ronaldo Ronaldo,
You're making life miserable for us coaches
It's a scorcher and the climate is very Brazilian. The players, they are clowning about in one of those moods that makes one wonder why we coaches give up so much of our time with these young players. We could be soaking up the sun somewhere else. Like maybe on a beach watching people go by, listening to the waves roll in and dreaming a bit. We can dream can we not? Let our minds wander in peace maybe, catching up on some reading and taking a peak at who's going by.

The Center Field Wall
It's game day and the players are restless all day long. In most cases it's because the day seems so long especially when it ends with a soccer game. The game is not foremost on their minds so there is no need to get all worked up so early about it. In fact, when the game actually approaches it will seem like the next day. So much will have taken place from morning until the pre-game meal.

Soccer Fans Must Speak-out for Soccer in the Media
Canada-US Women's Game Draws Pro Canadian Crowd
A sold out crowd attended the Canada – US women’s match at Varsity Stadium
on Saturday night, which ended in an exciting and hard-fought 2-2 draw.
The game was exceptional because of the entertainment value it offered
it’s fans. Some great passing by the Americans and quick counter attacks
by the Canadian with many attempts to shoot at goal made the game very
exciting. Throw in a few brilliant saves, a couple of goal posts and 4
goals, all before a record crowd of over 9,000. That was the largest crowd
to ever witness a female soccer game in Canada. That’s news. To see many
young soccer players, especially females all decked out in their own team
gear waving the Canadian flag was a great sight to see. The women played
with all they had and seem so pure in their efforts to play the game competitively
and fairly. No fake injuries or countless stoppages in play. The game flowed
beautifully.

Where Are All The Boys Going?
Once again I signed my two boys up for soccer this year. They play house league soccer and no I’m not
disappointed that they are not playing rep AAA or Premier or Provincial or whatever you call it. I’ll talk

Are Coaches Being Glorified?
Question. I do not score goals, run for touchdowns or make baskets: I do not make passes, receive passes or
make errant passes: I do not stop goals, make tackles or cover the opposition: I do not dribble, or stick
handle around opponents: and I do not sacrifice my body physically for the team. But I am involved in
sports and get the most close ups and individual airtime on Television than anyone else during a sports cast.

Is Soccer setting itself up for another
Figure Skating Controversy?
Do the laws of soccer make it too easy for officials to be bribed?
The Winter Olympics have recently concluded with a cloud of controversy directed mostly at the officiating.
Sport is supposed to belong to the athletes but unfortunately when money, and politics get in the way, as is the
case when the stakes are so high, there is the possibility of cheating and scandal.
